RV Winterization Guide for Northern California — Protect Your Plumbing Before It Freezes

Winter in Northern California can bring freezing temperatures, especially at higher elevations in Nevada, El Dorado and Placer County. For RV owners that means one thing — your plumbing system needs to be properly winterized before the cold sets in. Frozen pipes can crack and burst causing expensive water damage that is completely preventable with a proper RV winterization in Northern California before temperatures drop.
At Butler Mobile RV Repair we see the aftermath of frozen pipes every winter — and every single case could have been avoided. Here's your complete winterization checklist:
Drain Your Fresh Water Tank Completely Start by emptying your fresh water tank entirely. Even a small amount of water left in the tank can freeze and cause damage. Run your water pump briefly after draining to clear as much water from the lines as possible.
Blow Out Your Water Lines Using compressed air to blow out water lines is one of the most effective winterization methods. Connect an air compressor to your city water inlet and blow out each faucet one at a time — hot and cold separately. Don't forget outdoor shower connections and any other water outlets your RV might have.
Drain and Bypass Your Water Heater This step is critical and often forgotten! Your water heater holds several gallons of water that must be drained before winterizing. Most RVs have a bypass valve specifically for winterization — make sure it's in the bypass position before adding antifreeze to your system or you'll use several gallons of antifreeze just filling the water heater unnecessarily.
Use RV Antifreeze RV antifreeze is non-toxic and specifically designed for potable water systems — never use automotive antifreeze in your RV! Pour it into your fresh water tank or use a hand pump to push it through your lines until it appears at each faucet. Make sure to get it into:
All hot and cold faucets
The toilet
The shower
The outside shower if you have one
The ice maker line if applicable
Don't Forget the Toilet Pour RV antifreeze directly into the toilet bowl and flush it through to protect the seals and valve. Add a small amount to the bowl itself to keep seals from drying out during storage.
Protect Your Water Pump Make sure your water pump is completely clear of water — run it briefly after draining to push out any remaining water from the pump housing. A frozen pump is an expensive repair!
Open Cabinet Doors in Cold Weather If you're using your RV in cold weather rather than storing it, open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air from the interior to reach the pipes — especially overnight when temperatures drop the most.
💡 Pro Tip from Tim: Even if you plan to use your RV through the winter, know what temperatures your specific RV can handle and have a plan for nights that drop below freezing. Skirting around the base of your RV can make a significant difference in keeping pipes from freezing during use!
When to Call a Professional If you're not comfortable winterizing your RV yourself or aren't sure your system is fully protected, a professional winterization service is well worth the investment. One cracked pipe can cause thousands of dollars in water damage.
